All is well... So they say.

Well all is well with me. Thanks for everybody that called. I guess you guys really do read my blog lol. I had test galore. They tested my blood for lupus and took x-rays of my uterus to make sure nothing was wrong with that... and both test came back perfectly normal. There's one more test they think I should do but I decided to quit with it all. No more tests. I'm going to give the vagina a little time to rest. So I'm done with the idea of baby making for now. My focus is on getting through this wedding, buying a house, and my latest obsession.... LOCS!

I've decided to grow locs. I'm waiting until after October (well at least trying to wait) til the wedding is over. Locs seem to be a little unpredictable and I don't want my hair to hit an ugly stage just in time for wedding pics. Plus it'll give me time to research and find a loctician that I trust to cultivate my locs.

There's so many options with locs. Sisterlocs, palmrolling, latching, backcombing, etc... Yikes! Who knew. Well I've narrowed down the choices to a medium sized palm-rolled set and I'm soooooo EXCITED!. I just feel like it's time.  Plus, don't these just make you SWOON?

What many people don't know about me...

So I haven't been on here in a while  in eternity. Life has been happening and I haven't had time to blog about it. Besides things like hair haven't been seeming that important lately (I've had crazy growth but massive split ends and single strand knots. but I will give a hair update in a later post hopefully this week)

Anyway, this may surprise the very few people who know me that regularly check my blog. I just felt that it was necessary to talk about it. I think I feel so alone dealing with it but truth is, its quite common (well actually I'm only like 1% but when you think about how many people there are in the world., 1% is quite large) and the more I talk about it, the more I learn how common it really is...

What's this 1% you may ask... simply put, I am one of those girls, I though I'd never be. I'm the girl who has miscarriage after miscarriage with no real reason. So far, I've experienced 3. I'm a recurrent miscarriage-r. I am officially considered high risk and now have to undergo a shitload of invasive testing. My whoo-ha has never seen so much action. (Side note, I think gynecologists should have to serve you dinner, but i'll hit on that in another post)  FUN TIMES!! When I was younger I always said I never wanted to have kids but as I etched closer to 30, I realized I was wrong but now it's not as easy I as I once thought it could be. Biology and health class made it seem so simple. I think people take for granted that for most, it's easy to get pregnant, and easy to carry a baby to term but not for people like me.

Even more surprising to many is that my last miscarriage occurred in December after no heart beat was detected during an ultrasound. My D&C was scheduled on December 9... the same day my sister ended up going into labor. I don't even think she knows. I went in for the procedure at 9am. Zonked out on pain meds until 11pm, then went to the hospital to welcome the birth of my niece. Creepy right!? Nobody knew but my fiance, a couple of my close friends, and my mom (and people say I can't keep a secret lol). Anyway I thought I use my blog to educate people on miscarriages so that they don't feel sooo alone like I did. But I'll also still talk about hair, funny stuff and random goings on.

For those of you who are like "what the hell is a D&C?" You gon' learn today... Read below and until next time Peace, Love, and Healthy Babies...

According to the American Pregnancy Association...

D&C, also known as dilation and curettage, is a surgical procedure often performed after a first trimester miscarriage. Dilation means to open up the cervix; curettage means to remove the contents of the uterus. Curettage may be performed by scraping the uterine wall with a curette instrument or by a suction curettage (also called vacuum aspiration), using a vacuum-type instrument.

Is a D&C necessary after a miscarriage?

About 50% of women who miscarry do not undergo a D&C procedure. Women can safely miscarry on their own, with few problems in pregnancies that end before 10 weeks. After 10 weeks, the miscarriage is more likely to be incomplete, requiring a D&C procedure to be performed. Choosing whether to miscarry naturally (called expectant management) or to have a D&C procedure is often a personal choice, best decided after talking with your health care provider.
Some women feel comfort in going through a miscarriage in their own home, trusting their own body to do what it needs to. Some see this as a vital part of the healing process, eliminating the question of “what if?” about the health of the pregnancy. There are also many women who miscarry who have a history of gynecological problems and don’t want to risk the possibility of any more complications occurring from having a D&C procedure done. For most first trimester miscarriages, expectant management should be a viable option.
For some women, the emotional toll of waiting to miscarry naturally is just too unpredictable and too much to handle in an already challenging time. Healing for them may only start once the D&C procedure is done. A D&C may be recommended for women who miscarry later than 10-12 weeks, have had any type of complications, or have any medical conditions in which emergency care could be needed.

How is a D&C procedure done?

A D&C procedure may be done as an outpatient or inpatient procedure in a hospital or other type of surgical center. A sedative is usually given first to help you relax. Most often, general anesthesia is used, but IV anesthesia or paracervical anesthesia may also be used. You should be prepared to have someone drive you home after the procedure if general or IV anesthesia is used.
    1) You may receive antibiotics intravenously or orally to help prevent infection.
    2) The cervix is examined to evaluate if it is open or not. If the cervix is closed, dilators (narrow instruments in varying sizes) will be inserted to open the cervix to allow the surgical instruments to pass through. A speculum will be placed to keep the cervix open.
    3) The vacuum aspiration (also called suction curettage) procedure uses a plastic cannula (a flexible tube) attached to a suction device to remove the contents of the uterus. The cannula is approximately the diameter in millimeters as the number of weeks gestation the pregnancy is. For example, a 7mm cannula would be used for a pregnancy that is 7 weeks gestation. The use of a curette (sharp edged loop) to scrape the lining of the uterus may also be used, but is often not necessary.
    4) The tissue removed during the procedure may be sent off to the pathology lab for testing.
    5) Once the health care provider has seen that the uterus has firmed up and that the bleeding has stopped or is minimal, the speculum will be removed and you will be sent to recovery.

What are the possible risks and complications of a D&C procedure?

  • Risks associated with anesthesia such as adverse reaction to medication and breathing problems
  • Hemorrhage or heavy bleeding
  • Infection in the uterus or other pelvic organs
  • Perforation or puncture to the uterus
  • Laceration or weakening of the cervix
  • Scarring of the uterus or cervix, which may require further treatment
  • Incomplete procedure which requires another procedure to be performed

I owe you some pictures...

Lots of stuff going on in the past couple weeks.  I've cut my hair for the last time until next August (not counting necessary trims) and I'm happy to say I'm all curly!! I just need my length back so I've dedicated myself to protective styling for the next year. The goal is to have super big, at least shoulder length hair by the time of the wedding next August. I'm not super hung up on length but shoulder length is where I'm most comfortable because I'm addicted to my pony tail/puff.

So what I've been doing lately is my beloved twists and then an all out twist-out fro for special occasions. Nothing more, nothing less. Minimal manipulation. Only detangle on wash days (with my detangler) which is usually no more than once/month. Still haven't used any heat. Actually this month will be my one year anniversary of being heat free. TIME FLIES!

Also still sticking to my all natural routine (within reason). I now co-wash with Yes! To Carrots, and deep condition with Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Mask and Huetiful Hair Steamer, moisturize by spraying with a mix of vegetable glycerin and Aloe Vera, then seal with a coat of Shea and Cocoa butter.

Ps. Check the last picture for my fro (with head band) and newest tattoo (RIP Evelyn)... It's not super clear in the picture but I'll be sure to post more pictures when it's done healing.

Until next time... peace, love, and northstar burgers

Dear Gravity,

As I inch closer and closer to 21 (+3+2+1), I've noticed that your dirty little hands are clenching to my breast! LET THEM GO!

The Elusive Dress

So to be completely funky about it all... I hate wedding dresses! Well... maybe not all wedding dresses but I have never sat at a wedding and wanted to wear the bride's dress. Don't get me wrong every bride I have seen has looked beautiful in their own right but I just have never pictured myself in a ballroom/princess gown. While searching the internet for inspiration I found these *cue the music, I'm in LOVE*

Art Deco style wedding dresses from Yolan Cris 2011 Revival Vintage collection - Almeria
I LOVE this dress!! I WANT this dress!! I NEED this dress!!

or how about this one, I think my heart just stopped!
Yolan Cris 2011 wedding dresses from Revival Vintage bridal collection - Copenhague gown

Or this one...

Yolan Cris wedding dresses 2011 Revival Vintage bridal collection - Roma

Ugh! I need to grow at least 5 more inches, lose about 5-10 lbs, and find some big money... FAST!!

Until then, Peace, Love, and Lace...

I think I'll blog today...

Most recent picture of my puff. Taken about 2 weeks ago...

Sorry it's been so long, I've been reeeeaaallly busy! But I do have some new news!!

1. As of Jan 1, 2011 I've stopped eating meat sans seafood of course (I've cheated on accident only twice and both times were less than an oz.) My cheat #1 was on Jan 7. Me and the fiancé went out to eat for our anniversary (officially 8 years y'all!) and the wait was soooo long that the manager bought out samples to make all of us hungry guests happy. I was too quick to pick up the little toothpick with the sample on the end and throw it into my mouth!! On chew #3, I realized that 'chicken marsala' had chicken in it! oops. Cheat #2 actually happened this past Saturday at the casino buffet in Motor City. I saw they had collard greens (say what?!) and HAD to have them. Got all the way to the table, put a fork full in my mouth and 2 swallows later realized I was eating shredded pieces of pork... ahh well! Can't build Rome in a day. And truthfully after 2 months and only 2 cheats... I'm doing great! Considering how much of a meat eater I am. Go figure a 'vegetarian meat lover'...

2. I've also taken a break from my holy grail product Shea Moisture. Although I still LOVE this brand and it smells so yummy. This winter was rough and their moisture intense shampoo wasn't doing much for my hair so I ditched the shampoo and bought some Yes! To Carrots conditioner and decided to only co-wash in the winters from now on. This was by far the greatest idea I had all year!!  I also invested in some vegetable glycerin and Aloe Vera juice. Another AWESOME idea. I replaced my conditioner mix in my spray bottle with equal parts water, aloe juice, and vegetable glycerin. Also after reading the ingredients of the Shea Moisture curl enhancing smoothie, I decided to make it myself. Extraordinary idea #3.  I melted down some Shea butter, cocoa butter, and mango butter along with some coconut oil, olive oil, vegetable glycerin, and Aloe Vera juice. After it was melted completely and mixed together, I let it start to solidify and about half way through whipped it with a spoon until it was fluffy. Soo needless to say, my Shea Moisture line has been replaced by an even more natural and cheaper version made by moi (that's french for me... I think). Plus Yes! to Carrots conditioner is only $7.99 at Target compared to Shea Moisture's $9.99. That's a McDonald's new oatmeal!! FTW!!
Random Side Note: McDonald's oatmeal is delicious and so is North Star's ginger ale. Thatisall

3. I've done some MAJOR cutting! One thing about me is I lack patience. I like things to happen NOW! My goal is by the end of May for all of my hair to be curly again and I am well on my way. This year the focus was healthy. Next year the focus is growth and length retention... I haven't posted pics of my hair in a while. My next post I'll load y'all up!

3. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my tangle teaser!! I went MONTHS without detangling and I did not have high hopes for that thing to get through my hair and it did! With minimal hair loss!! Now I use it once/week after I co-wash and my twists outs have been BANGIN! I actually washed my hair today and lost hardly any strands! I'm in looooovvvveee. So anyway they sell them at Sally's for $9.99.

Hair Experiences

So I wanted to update my blog and since this started out as a hair blog, I should probably start with that. Since I started working so much my hair has been neglected. womp womp. Also, for the purpose of this blog, I've decided to name her Sophia (after Sophia from Color Purple who didn't do what nobody told her to). Sophia is becoming quite unruly lately due to the lack of care, she's still pretty soft and shiny but the winter is taking its toll and she is quite dry.

For Christmas I got my huetiful hair steamer and tried it out the week after. Sophia LOVE LOVE LOVES it!! It is my new favorite appliance!! I haven't taken any pictures of me actually using it yet, womp, but I'll remember next time.

I also got a set of curlformers which I totally begged for all last summer. Less than impressed by these. I've used them twice and both times have been disastrous! I have seen people who have used them and gotten really good results but for me, I think my bantu knots are cuter than the curls I get from the curlformers. After I took them out and played with my hair I looked more like my name was [insert old country name here] instead of Tiffani. I've narrowed down what I think may be the problem. I think because I got the long and wide curlformers and I really need long and narrow or long and skinny (if those versions exists) I love huge hair with tons of small curls but with these, I seem to get small hair with big curls... not good! So I'm going to try them 1 more time and hopefully third times the charm otherwise I'll be putting them on Ebay. Also they suck to sleep in, they take too long to install (bantu knots are waay quicker and look better), and my cat thinks I have snakes in my hair and keeps punching me in the head.
Until next time... Peace, Love, and crab cakes...

Hair Story- Stop Pissing me off!! lol

I promised some blogging and damn it, that's just what I'm going to give you!

So lately I've been getting tons of compliments on my hair. It seem everywhere I go somebody wants to touch it. Interestingly enough, it seems that I get the most compliments when my twist are aching to be done over. I have a few things to say about this...
  1. I have NO problem with people feeling or touching my hair but my hair is not a free for all. You do have to ask first and I have to say yes. You can't just come up and grab it and pull on it. Not acceptable. I appreciate the compliments and will answer any questions you have but last week a girl was sick (coughing, sniffing, etc) and came up grabbed a section of my hair without my permission and without sanitizer.  YUCK!
  2. I HATE offside compliments. Why do women feel the need to do that? A lady told me, "I like your hair but I couldn't wear my hair like that to work"...*blank stare* First off, I see more natural hair in the professional world then I see in out in the streets. Second, It's implying that my hair is unprofessional simply because its in its natural state.  I hate that! We don't have to conform to be professional! My work speaks for itself not my hair. People told me when I got tatted I wouldn't get a job either and not one employer has ever asked or mentioned my hand tattoo (its a frog... super cute!)
  3. Part deux of the offside compliments. Stop using this stupid "good hair" excuse! "You can do that to your hair because you got that good stuff" YIKES!! really? My hair kinks and curls more than the average person. My bad hair days are horrible ones just like the next person. In fact, I remember getting made fun of when I was younger because of my hair. If you use that hair typing system (I don't use it but I am aware of what my type is considered) I am technically a 4a/4b and those are not hair types that are typically considered "good hair." Good hair is not straight-er or silky-er hair! Good hair is healthy hair. Learn how to take care of what God put on your head! My hair became happy when I finally stopped trying to make it do what it was never supposed to do!  Example: I used to hate humidity until I stopped pressing my hair. Now it's my best friend. Your hair is telling you what it needs. LISTEN!

Not Now, I'm Busy!!

Haven't blogged in a while and I totally intend to blog this weekend but don't hold me to it. Besides it prob just me and like 5 friends who read this anyway so nobody is probably even missing it.

Where to start? Well for some over-eager reason I went from 0 jobs to 2!!  One fulltime and one part time that equals approximately 60 hours a week!! Well this is not exactly true, I was already working part time at OSU but now I'm also employed by the health department! So needless to say: Who in the sam-hell has time for blogging?!! I'm seriously just too damn busy!!

The crazy part is that I have already planned the use of my pay checks!! As we all know my wedding is coming up (in August 2012 but that's really not that far away!) and I have some major money to save. I hopefully will be buying my dress in January. I could wait on this part but I'd rather just get it out of the way plus I'm sooo super picky when it comes to my clothes (and wedding gowns. I pretty much hate every dress that I've seen at recent weddings... maybe not hate but I definately would not wear them and those seem to be current fashion... go figure, but I digress...) so I need to plan way in advance for this dress. I also need to save at least 2K so this summer when I find my venue, I can just pay it off (i really hate lingering bills). There's some other stuff I'm saving for too (like possibly a new car. My soon to be 10 year old car is so embarrassing. And I've definately caused some major body damage.)

In other random ass "I'm so busy" news... I've started writing again. I secretly my whole life have wanted to be a poet or a songwriter in my spare time (some people want to be models or musicians... don't judge me) so maybe in a future blog i'll showcase some stuff "Now keep in mind that I'm an artist and I'm sensitive about my SHIT".

I've also tried some new products and want to give them a review when I find time, and still no heat to my mop (I think I'll give her a name soon because she really is an entity of her own to me. Can't use Shaniqua because that is the name of my uterus... I named her one day when she was flippin the fuck out on me during my cycle... yeah that was probably too much info hunh?...) but I'm bored to tears of these twist but I'm staying strong so I can be sure to get the amount of growth I want by May.

So God willing... Until the next post... Peace, Love, and hot sauce...

My Holy Grail Product- Shea Moisture Organic Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie

So I've tried a lot of natural hair products and I have found my holy grail moisturizer! It has super yummy ingredients and is thick enough to keep my hair moisturized for days! I will say that I don't notice any "curl enhancing" aspects but then again my hair is in twist so I'll have to update you on that come spring or summer...

Ingredients:
Deionized Water, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea
Bu@er)*, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Mangifera
Indica (Mango) Seed Bu@er*, Persea GraQssima
(Avocado) Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Aloe
Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Silk Protein, Melia
Azadirachta (Neem) Seed Oil, Daucus Carota SaQva
(Carrot) Seed Oil, Caprylyl glycol, Sorbitol Esters,
EssenQal Oil Blend, Lonicera Caprifolium
(Honeysuckle) Flower (and) Lonicera Japonica
(Japanese Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Tocopherol
(Vitamin E). *Denotes CerQfied Organic Ingredient.

Price:
$9.99 at Target

How I use it
I use an index finger full (awesome measurement hunh?) and rub it in my hands, distribute it through my hair and then seal with a mix I made of coconut oil, olive oil, conditioner, and water...

Still twisting...

Still twisting. I thought it would be hard for me to stay in twist all winter but actually I love it! It takes me about 3.5 hours to twist it all up and it last for about a month (well kind of, I usually retwist small sections throughout the month and retwist my 2strand flats at the front every two weeks) and takes me about 5 mins to do my hair daily after.

I also did some major trimming of my heat damage and I am so excited about that. I'm one step closer to all of my hair being nappy again! The funny part is that you can hardly tell that the front of my hair is drastically shorter than the back since I keep it flat twisted while it grows back. Here's some pictures:

Side note* The hair clipped in these pictures is wet! and NOT curly AT ALL! This should be proof that heat is just as damaging as a chemical relaxer! Use at your own risk but me personally... DONE! I'm just so happy that I'm about 90% curly again.

And FYI I'm am officially 6 MONTHS HEAT FREE!

To Completely different ideas... and I love them BOTH!

Colors aside, the style is still a toss up...

simple, sweet, summertime

OR

funky, full of hue, fun

To take from Donnie and Marie (with modification of course) "I'm a little bit classic, and I'm a little bit of funk and soul"...

I love my hair on Sesame Street

I originally saw this on curlynikki.com and had to repost it. This is REVOLUTIONARY to say the least. When I have my daughters... they WILL watch this video. It's an amazing way to show our children how AWESOME our hair really is... and let's face it... we don't see this on tv too often!!

When in doubt, throw a hat on it...

So I love love love hats! And I'm pretty definate that this winter, people will see less of my hair and more of my head coverings. Not only do I think I look super cute with my hair covered (I think everyone looks good with the perfect hat that accentuates your face) but its a great protective styling option. Why tug and pull at your hair when you can twist it up and put a hat on it... for weeks!!! A bad hair day can turn into an awesome hair month in a matter of seconds...

Take yesterday for example, I had a party to go to and my hair was all twisted up. I could have just untwisted and done a twist out fro but I just really didn't feel like it plus it took me about 3 hours to twist it all up the night before (a different set of twist than the previous post, nothing special, just a head full of two strands). Earlier that day I went shopping with the boo and found this uber awesome hat that he swears he picked out (which he didn't) and I really had no intention of wearing it that night but...

*random side note* I apologize for all the boobage. My big booby girls understand...
As you can see, I'm not one to really "dress up" to go out. I think its a waste of time really. I used to get fly to go out, complete with heels and makeup but for what? As I get older, I prefer a good pair of jeans, a loose blousy top and in this case a sweater and some boots (but a good pair of flats could've been substituted). So anyway, I went out yesterday thinking that I was going to be the "under-dressed homely" girl but it was exactly the opposite! I cannot tell you how many women commented on my hat and how many awkward stares I got from random old men from across the bar...

Anyway, my only concern is that my new job (which i'll blog about at a later date) might not be as accepting of my head wraps and hats like my other jobs have been... but as sure as I am Tiffani, I'll definately try and make a place for head coverings in public health. Maybe I'll argue that keeping my head covered makes me less susceptible to illness because less heat is escaping from my body which then leads to greater productivity and less loss of monies due to my potential use of sick days...and if I can't be at work, the important work that I will be doing to get more children vaccinated won't be completed and hundreds, maybe thousands of children will go unvaccinated leading to more absences from school, leading to an decrease in the high school graduation rate leading to an increase in the number of unproductive people in the workforce in the US... stretch? maybe... but you know I'll do it. lol

So anyway, I said all this to say... When all else fails, throw a hat on it and keep it moving! Your hair will appreciate it and you'll look super cute.

*Last random but important side note* If your hat is not silk or satin lined it would be in your best interest to wrap your hair underneath with a silk or satin scarf. Why? well because the fabric of the hat can draw moisture out of your hair leaving you with super dry hair which would make this protective style all be in vain...

protective styling: twist...

So I've challenged myself to wear protective styling in the form of twist or braids all fall and winter and so far so good. This is my second set of twists (I forgot to take pictures of the first set... sue me). The first set lasted for about 2 weeks. When I did this I got lazy so instead of doing individual plaits... I did 2 strand flat twists. Came out ok especially since I'v never flat twisted my whole head before. To further illustrate how lazy I got, I only co-washed with deep conditioner and never even washed it out. I scrubbed my head with plain ol' H2O (water) to get out any residue (which I might add is close to nil since I switched over to an all natural product line... I barely even itch anymore... Can we say AWESOME) then added deep conditioner and put a bag over my head (some ppl use hair baggies, I'm cheap and use grocery store bags... great way to repurpose and help the environment, just be careful to leave yourself some room to breath... you don't want to end up in the emergency room with a grocery store bag on your head trying to explain to hubby that you weren't trying to kill yourself) to set for about an hour while I cooked dinner (no. really I did!) then took the bag off, sectioned it off and put it into pony tails while I twisted each section. Started with the top and worked my way around...

*Side note* you can totally see my henna hue in these pics. My hair looks reddish-brown and it is normally jet black...I love my henna!!
*Side note #2* this is 3 day old hair. When/if you decide to twists, it won't be as fuzzy on day 1. And if you use a gel it prob won't frizz out as much either. I just hate gel (among many other things) because it seems to dry my hair out so all I twisted with was water (because my hair was still wet), conditioner, and cocoa butter. You can twist with whatever you want or nothing at all. Its up to you.
Anyway I highly double that the flat twist will last a whole two weeks like my single plaits (but i'm definately going to push it as long as I can take it). So when I take these out, I'll finally wash and deep condition... and maybe even henna... its been about a month right lol?

Need to know how to flat twist? No need to search YouTube... I'v taken care of that for you.
*Note* this time around. I did mine wet. really doesn't matter. Some people think it's easier to deal with dry hair. I just don't like to manipulate mine too much after it has dried. Why? because it hurts!! plus I didn't want to wait forever for it to air dry first since I no longer use heat. To each their own.

Excuse me while I crack the hell up!!

Every Little Step I take... Somebody teach Mike Tyson how to do the running man... Please!!
